Spot, puppies, late 2020
Remember Spot? My friend and roommate rescued 2 puppies from the highway beside my house. Poor little souls would have been roadkill that day if Fabian had not rescued them. We named the female Zero(the matrix) and her male brother Spot because of the huge black spot on his back. Fabian asked pleadingly to keep Zero to which I agreed. We would then endeavour to find Spot a furever home.

My good friend Helen who had just recently said goodbye to her trusted dog agreed to take Spot. I knew that once settled in, he would have a good home. Everything was fine but Spot being the asshole he is would not leave her cats alone. It was too much for Helen. Even our vet thought that he would never grow out of this. That has proven to be true as I have just received a message that he killed a squirrel. He’s cute but a not the smartest kid on the block. I really did not want Spot back. Five dogs was enough. But he was collected and brought back home. Six dogs it was. Spot being the jerk proved to be a hassle for me but I did what I could to make him fit into the pack. Seven made it quite clear upon his arrival home that he was the boss and you are my bitch. Siete would not let him get away with anything. His sister Zero had now another playmate so she was cool. Six on the other hand was not quite mature enough to lay down any rules and without supervision they would fight. Both were trying to find their place in the pack and for me it was a pain. He was totally of his own mind, refusing to take any corrections from me. It was a daily work in progress. He was now part of the home as finding another home was not happening.

One afternoon my roommate comes home in tears. I am not sure of the dates but this is a good time to recall this story. On his daily rounds delivering water he found a litter of puppies in a plastic bag. Humans really are the cruelest species. Needless to say, he rescued all five of them. The first night they stayed at his friends house but they could not stay there. Two of the five sadly died and the remaining three were brought home, full of worms and covered in fleas. I was not happy. I did not come to Mexico to have my life consumed by rescuing unwanted dogs. Some may find that rather hypocritical of me as I love dogs but six dogs was plenty for me to look after. Also I did not have the finances to take on such an ongoing feat. You have to understand that these puppies were now the third rescue from my roommate. There seemed to be a pattern happening. I agreed that they could stay on these conditions. Homes would have to be found. And most importantly, I would have no responsibility for their lives. It was a really hard decision for me because these little souls deserved a better chance. But Fabian needed to understand how much time and effort has to go into saving discarded, left for dead dogs. Just because I am home he could not assume that I would do what was necessary. Medication, keeping their room clean, feeding and finding homes. It was hard on both of us but in the end, Fabian I believe learned a valuable lesson. He would think twice before taking on that immense responsibility as much as his heart wanted to help. Through his efforts all the puppies found homes and we were back to the happy home of six dogs and Tai, the cat.

During this time, covid was still a much discussed topic. Being in a beautiful climate sure helped. Places were open including the local restaurants so gatherings were still happening on a regular basis so we could all keep up with the gossip!

Life continued to be beautiful and I was grateful. I was zentangling, writing in this blog when I put my mind to it but most of all my garden occupied the major part of my time apart from playing with all the dogs. I was determined to make this the most beautiful garden I had ever done and it was starting to look fantastic. Tepoztlan had the perfect climate except for some added water requirements during the dry months of winter. Luckily I had plenty. There was a huge tank that was hooked up to town water. Please note I didn’t go crazy, just enough to keep the garden alive until the rains came. During the light spray over my garden, hummingbirds would hover in the spray. That was quite lovely to see. They would come everywhere and anywhere to enjoy the spray. Water is life. Sadly due to an invasion of ants my grapefruit tree was unable to produce any fruit. We tried to get rid of them but with ongoing construction next door and the widening of the highway the ants wanted to build new homes and they decided to use my garden. We did get them kind of under control but wow what a menace!

See you next time with Christmas 2020 and the new year of 2021 showing its head.
